The interior design profession provides services encompassing research, development, implementation of plans and designs of interior environments to alleviate in improving quality of life, increase productivity, and protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The actual process of interior design follows a systematic, coordinated methodology. Research, analysis, and integration of information into the creative process result in an appropriate interior environment.

Interior Services:

(1) Programming:
Identify, analyse client needs, evaluate existing documentation and conditions
• Assess project resources, limitations. Identify life, safety, and code requirements
• Develop project schedules, work plans, and budgets
• Analyse design objectives and spatial requirements
• Integrate findings with their experience and knowledge of interior design

(2) Conceptual Design:
Formulate for client discussion, approval of preliminary plans and design concepts that are appropriate and describe the character, function, and aesthetic of project

(3) Design Development:
Develop, present review and approval of final design recommendations for space planning and furnishing arrangements; wall, window, floor, and ceiling treatments; furnishings, fixtures, and millwork, colour, finishes, and hardware; lighting, electrical, and communications requirements.
• Develop art, accessory, and graphic, signage programs
• Develop budgets suitable for client and his project
• Presentation media which can include drawings, sketches, perspectives, renderings, colour and material boards, photographs, and models if required

(4) Contract Documents:
Prepare working drawings, specifications for non-load bearing interior construction, materials, finishes, furnishings, fixtures, and equipment for the client’s approval
• Collaborate with professional services of speciality consultants and licensed practitioners in technical areas of mechanical, electrical, and load-bearing design as required by professional practice or regulatory approval. Identify qualified vendors. Preparing bid documentation, collect and review bids
• Assist the clients in awarding contracts

(5) Contract Administration:
Administer contract documents on behalf of client – as their agent:
• Confirm required permits are accumulated
• Review, approve shop drawings, samples to ensure consistency with original design concepts
• To conduct on-site visits and also field inspections
• Monitor contractors’ and suppliers progress
• Overseeing installation of furnishings, fixtures and equipment
• Prepare lists of deficiencies for client’s use and benefit

Interior services are indeed diverse and complex. At first glance, the idea of grappling with abstracts such as beauty, quality, proportion and harmony may not help one to design an interior space; it is through the interior designers relationship of understanding of the laws that govern space, light, colour and materials that we can, in fact, realise these qualities in the decoration of interior spaces.
